“Pull over.” I reached for the door handle.

“What? No.” Judas reached across me and yanked the door closed. “You’re the City’s Ancient, who knows what you’re stepping into out there.”

“And that’s exactly why I need to do it.” I cast him a glare. “If this was your territory, wouldn’t you?”

That was the point, wasn’t it? If Tricks City was his to protect, he’d be out there. So why was it so hard for him to let me? I sighed and turned to him, feeling the aching divide, and I wasn’t talking about the gap between the seats. I was talking about us, about the tenderness we were missing. The one buried under obligation and exhaustion. “Come with me,” I answered. “Out there, together.”

He turned his head and stared out of the windshield. “Okay, but we stick together. I don’t want any damn mortal getting near you with a damn crucifix and a bottle of holy water.

I reached across the seat and grasped his hand. “I love you.”

His breath caught. Surprise widened his eyes and his voice deepened. “I love you, too. I just want to get past this damn night.”

I did too, more than I wanted anything. And a rogue Witch was something I couldn’t afford. I reached for the handle again as Judas climbed out of the driver’s side.

Lightning slashed across the sky. I lifted my gaze as the darkness brightened, and in the glare, I saw it. The other side. The world of Gods and Immortals. A world so very different from this one. And one place I didn’t want to see.

Halloween was more than a night of celebration. It was the one night where the veil between this world and the other side was the thinnest. A night where Ghouls and monsters roamed both sides of existence and howled for one another.

And it was that world I felt reach out to me and whisper, ‘Look up and see me.’

“I see you.” I sucked in a breath. “I see you clearer than ever before.”

“You say something?” Judas closed the door and rounded the hood.

I shook my head and met his gaze, closing the door behind me. The crowd was gathering. But the mortal chants of hate and exile were not as loud as before. I searched for the stranger from the pendant amongst the faces.

“Can you see him?” Judas stilled beside me.

One shake of my head and I felt panic starting to rise.

“What the fuck?” Bond muttered. “What the Hell is going on there?”

I jerked my gaze to him and then followed his stare. One of the Vampires was kissing a protestor. He had his arms around her waist and one of her hands was tangled in his long hair. She dropped the sign she was holding, leaving anger behind for love.

But it wasn’t just one of them. Wolves and Vampires, and even a Panther joined the surging swarm of mortals. Lips met, hands entwined as desire coursed through the city street.

“What the fuck is happening here?” Nero murmured, unable to look away.
